NHL Team Records Back-To-Back (posted 03.01.10)
by Gus Katsaros

Entering the Olympics break, one in every four NHL games featured one opponent on the back end of a back-to-back set, facing a rested club that hadn't played the previous night.

Post break, the rate is virtually unchanged at 24%. A compressed, tight schedule presented due to the Olympic break, make these situations critical for points in the standings. In the previous Olympics year, 2006, 361 games remained in the schedule for the NHL and less are scheduled the rest of the way in 2010.

At the break there were 921 GP with 235 (25.5%) involving a match up as outlined. Post break, 75 of 309 games (24%) feature this matchup, with some teams having a distinct advantage over opponents in difference-making games with postseason implications.

Schedules have critical havoc potential and an in depth look at the impact appears at Dirk Hoag's blog On The Forecheck.

Below you'll find individual team records at the break with a breakdown of the matchup from both opponent's advantage and that of the victim on the back end of a b2b set.

A full team-by-team breakdown is available here at McKeen's from season's onset.

Alongside team records appear two columns with the first showing season totals as either the opponent or victim of this b2b matchup. The second column contains the number of games remaining this season in both situations.

Notes

As Opponents

San Jose, with only 7 games this season - down from 20 (16-2-2) in 2008-09 - have scorched their way to an impressive 6-0-0-1 record and NHL leading .857 winning percentage.

Washington (4-0-0-1, .800 winning percentage) presents an interesting scenario. They've played half of 10 games this season, with five remaining, tie amongst the league lead as opponents.

Boston played opponents that had games the night before

Minnesota were down to 11 from 20 the previous season, and rank a comfortable fifth with only three games remaining with this advantage. Trailing a playoff spot by five points, every opportunity to exploit only betters the odds of postseason dates.

Pittsburgh ranked second with (19 GP 12-4-3) against opposition who played the night before. They lead the NHL with 17 such times this season, having burned 13 already (9-3-1).

Looking specifically at Boston, they are 3-2 in five games facing opponents on the back end of b2b sets, down significantly from the 16 times (14-2 record) only one season ago.

Calgary is winless in this matchup, squandering three opportunities (0-3-0-0) yet have five games remaining, sitting in eighth place at the break and fighting for a playoff spot.

Phoenix, despite being listed amongst the middle of the pack with a .600 winning percentage, has only lost one of 10 total games (6-1-0-3). Impressive given their turnaround this season.
