McKeen's correspondent Rick Springhetti was able to interview Drummondville Voltiguers star forward and Montreal Canadiens prospect Gabriel Dumont toward the end of the QMJHL regular season and discussed his impressive year. Please note: a french version of the article is also included.

Among the players drafted at the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, there were many who were expected to be top scorers in their perspective junior leagues and many youngsters such as Jeremy Morin (47 goal), Taylor Beck (39 goals), Brayden Schenn (34 goals) or Cody Eakin (47 goals), are indeed doing well. Surprisingly, Gabriel Dumont, a 5th round draft pick of the Montreal Canadiens had more goals than any of the players mentioned above with 53. All this while playing good defence (plus-43), and bringing a physical dimension (143 hits and127 PIM).

"With Masse, Riendeau and Kulikov on our team last season, we had good veterans who were successful, so I didn't mind being an energy player. Now, I have the opportunity to score more goals in an offensive role and I am trying to do that, and to do that, I have to understand my role well. I play with Sean Couturier who should be in the top five players drafted next season and he is an amazing player, so I try to help get him some space on the ice, go to the net with my stick down and not waste scoring chances. What is also important for a player my size is to be able to anticipate the play well and get to the puck first," Gabriel Dumont told McKeen's.

Drummondville head-coach Mario Duhamel has experienced coaching against Dumont last season as an assistant with the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies and he has noticed some changes.

"When I coached against him last season, his role was different. He was an intense player with an incredible work ethic who tried to get under your skin. What I had to do was to make sure that my players kept their cool and not get him going physically because he is so tough. This season, coaching him, I gave him a role on the top line with Sean Couturier hoping he could help make room for him and knowing he could get his share of goals but I didn't expect quite so much. The thing is, at first, you are happy that he is having such a hot streak but, at this point, it has been going on long enough that it's no longer a streak and we realize that we have a scorer who can do all the things he did last season and a lot more".

Dumont gives a lot of credit to the Montreal Canadiens organisation and their coaching staff for his improved numbers this season.

"Although I was injured and not able to attend the (Montreal) Canadiens orientation camp this summer, they did explain to me what I needed to do to become a better player. My skating has improved a lot since last season. I am a smaller player (5-foot-11) and they taught me that my strides were too long. The team explained to me, with the use of video, how I could improve on that and the difference has been huge. I am quicker to get to the puckcarrier and quicker to get open for scoring chances.

Although Gabriel Dumont does not expect to be a goal-scorer in the future, his ability to anticipate the play, his willingness to go to the net hard and his overall intensity could lead to more success that most people imagined. After all, he was the top scorer in Quebec Midget AAA hockey for the 2006-2007 season, but he prefers to focus on what got him noticed in the first place.

"I know that I have to work hard every time I am on the ice, play with intensity, play good defence and put the puck in the net when I have the chance. That is my game."

And his game is getting better all the time.

Gabriel Dumont: Droit au but
